Donated Wheelchair Gives Dog a New Lease on Life

WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Princeton looks like a normal Chihuahua, until he takes his first step. The two-year-old gets around in custom-made wheelchair. Now regular play dates are just a walk in park, but five months ago, they weren’t this easy.

“He was very, very thin, covered in sores, he was stained from all the waste,” said Regenia Brabham.

Brabham with the rescue group, Critical Care for Animal Angels saved the paralyzed puppy from Macon-Bibb Animal Welfare in April. He was found wandering in a wheelchair that didn’t quite fit.

“The wheelchair was designed for another dog, the legs laid flat and were strapped down immobile, the longer I had him the more mobility he’s got in his legs, so he needed a chair that enabled him to move,” she said.

But there was one big problem. The cost of new ride: $300 and with dozens of other injured animals, Brabham couldn’t foot the bill. After some networking, she discovered For Paws Hospice and the Red Flyer, who donated Princeton his new wheels.

“He’s got a lot more use of his legs, he’s a lot more muscular than he was, he plays,” she said, “he’s just a regular dog.”

Now the little guy is on a roll, free to roam, as he searches for a permanent home. But, Brabham says if no one picks up Princeton, he’s welcome to stay with her as long as his little heart pleases.
