GC Women’s Tennis Picks Up Wins at Home Tournament

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. (GCSU RELEASE) – The Georgia College women’s tennis team kicked off its fall season Friday in the GC Women’s Fall Championships at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility. Players from Wingate University, Lander University and UNC Pembroke came to Milledgeville to play in bracketed singles and round robin doubles action.

Senior Ivana Marevic (Rottweil, Germany) got a shutout victory in Flight A Singles, blanking Marion Courbis of Lander. Also in Flight A, freshman Macy Polk (Powder Springs, Ga.) struggled in the first, but got a straight-set win of 7-6, 6-0, her first collegiate victory over Carolina Lainez of Lander.

Freshman Cristalei Polk (Powder Springs, Ga.) earned her first collegiate win over Morgan Winston of Wingate 6-1, 6-2 in Flight B. Classmate Hannah Serdinia (Suwanee, Ga.) nearly blanked UNCP’s Monica Espita with a 6-1, 6-0 effort for Serdinia’s first victory.

In C Singles, Sarah Murray (Alpharetta, Ga.) dropped a 6-1, 6-2 match to Wingate’s Sierra Parsons.

Doubles action was a round robin format and in Flight A, Serdinia and Marevic teamed for an 8-5 loss to Wingate’s Ali Evers and Becca Thomas. The Bobcat duo evened out their record with an 8-5 win of their own over Cayce Bradley and Lainez of Lander.

In Flight B Doubles, the Polk sisters edged Wingate’s Caroline Holland and Layla Tanik 9-7. The Bobcat pair made it 2-0 with a convincing 8-2 win over Monica Espitia and Leigh Anne McAfee.

Action continues tomorrow, Sept. 21 at 9 a.m. as the tournament returns to singles play.
