Mercer Bears Use Big Second Half to Earn 4-0 Win over Charleston Southern

MACON, Ga. (MERCER RELEASE) – The Mercer women’s soccer team used three second half goals to pull off a 4-0 win over Charleston Southern on Thursday evening at Bear Field.

Eight different players registered at least one point for Mercer (3-3-1) who out-shot Charleston Southern (3-3) 29-9 overall and 17-3 in shots on goal.

Senior Casey Barrett got the scoring started for Mercer in the 14th minute of play when she one-timed a low cross past Charleston Southern goalkeeper Caitlin Cody to give the home team a 1-0 lead.

Up 1-0 at halftime, the Bears came out of halftime more energized on the offensive end and it showed starting in the 70th minute of the contest.

Freshman Maddie Clark whipped in a cross that sophomore Sydney Brogden settled and skipped past Cody to give the Bears a 2-0 advantage.

Mercer received its final two tallies from juniors Washida Blackman and Brianna Stampler to cap the scoring in the contest a 4-0.

Mercer goalkeeper Maggie Cropp made two saves in the match to record her first shutout of the season.

Mercer returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 15 when it welcomes Jacksonville State into town. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Bear Field.
