Less Fluoride Better For Your Teeth

Fluoride in drinking water has been found to cut cavities and tooth decay, but federal officials are now saying it might be too much of a good thing.

The U.S. Government wants to lower the recommended levels of fluoride in city water supplies. Macon Water Authority Director of Water Treatment Gary McCoy says, “In 1976 Bibb County voted to actually have fluoride in their drinking water and now it’s regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency and we have to make sure that we don’t exceed any of the limits that’s set.”

Too much fluoride can cause tooth streaking, but that is usually only noticed by dentists.

The Macon Water Authority currently produces a fluoride at a level of .1 to 1.0. The state recommends fluoride be produced at .7 to 1.2.
