Kids Battling Cancer Get Free Night Out at Johnny G’s, Backpacks Filled with School Supplies
WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Monday night at Johnny G’s Fun Center was all about a special group of kids who are battling cancer.
“This is our back-to-school bash,” says Jay’s HOPE Community Relations Coordinator, Christie Johnson. “We do it every year. It’s a chance for our kids to come out and run around and have fun with each other, but most importantly, we aim to alleviate some of the burden parents are facing in buying school supplies: we give them all backpacks filled with their basic school supply needs.”
Thanks to Jay’s HOPE, close to 100 kids and their siblings get this free night of fun on the house.
“They get to play all the games and have pizza and eat cupcakes,” says Johnson. “We’re so blessed to be able to offer this through a partnership with Johnny G’s and the Children’s Hospital at the Medical Center.”
For mother of five Brittany Blake, this night is all about getting away from it all. Her 10-year-old son has been fighting brain cancer since he was 6.
“It kind of gets our mind off of all the treatments and the doctor’s appointments,” says Blake. “It definitely helps, financially.”
12-year-old Carleesia Hinton is a cancer survivor herself. She says events like these helped her family tremendously when she was battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
“Treatments aren’t–they’re not cheap,” says Hinton. “It’s a lot of expensive medical bills, so them giving out school supplies will take it easy on the parents.”
The Jay’s HOPE kids who are currently in the hospital and weren’t able to make it Monday also got a backpack filled with school supplies delivered straight to their hospital rooms.
