Record Rainfall Wreaking Havoc on Macon Landfill
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Record rains last month caused a big mess at the city’s landfill, and after passing state inspection last year for the first time in several years, the landfill failed an inspection in June.
Tuesday, Macon Public Works Director, Richard Powell, told council members the department has plenty of equipment and resources to fix all the erosion caused by the recent rain and get back within state standards, but they just need some dry weather to help them out.
Council members mostly agreed the heavy rains did have an impact on the landfill but wanted to know what Powell plans to do to fix the muddy problem.
He says some of the work is already underway.
“We’re starting to move some more dirt in the area so we can fill up some of the ruts and start re-grading the slopes and hopefully get some grass,” says Powell.
Last month, Macon got more than a foot of rain–more than three times the normal amount.
