Local Credit Union Offers Help to RAFB Furloughed Workers

WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – This week, thousands of civilian workers at Robins Air Force Base took their first furlough day and one local credit union is helping create the financial plan to help make up the difference.

Robins Federal Credit Union is just minutes away from the base gates, consumer lending manager Shane Reagan is standing by with a financial line of defense.

“We’re trying to help them get ahead,” Reagan said, “some people just need a little step to get it.”

The furloughs are the result of nationwide federal budget cuts forcing civilian workers to take 11 unpaid days from now until the end of the September. The majority of the customers at Robins Federal Credit Union are base workers and the spending cuts equate to about a 10% reduction in pay.

“Robins has always stood by its members through the good times and the bad,” Reagan said, “we’ve tried to put together some programs to be really proactive and help our members.”

Members at Robins Federal Credit Union now have several options including furlough loans with special rates, furlough skip a payment options for existing loans and refinancing. Since there is no single solution when it comes to battling the economy, Reagan recommends letting them lend a hand.

“We really want folks to come in or call and let’s take a look at this case by case,” he said.

But in all cases, the earlier the better, he warns people don’t wait until the budget is behind and bills are piling up to ask for help.
