Walker Claims Final Word In IndyCar Race Control

TORONTO (AP) – IndyCar’s new President of competition says he has final authority on calls in race control and was part of the decision-making process to penalize Dario Franchitti at Toronto and later overturn the call.

Derrick Walker says there are nine total people in race control all tasked with different jobs.

Although the chief race steward is responsible for calling the race, Walker said Sunday consultations are made and he can overrule any decision.

Walker spoke to The Associated Press on Sunday about the race control process and decisions made a day earlier in the first of two races around the street course at Exhibition Place. It comes as former race director Brian Barnhart was criticized by fans for a handful of calls Saturday while he filled in for Beaux Barfield.
