Baldwin High Students Say YES to Summer Learning
MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Summer is the time when students put down their textbooks, but that’s not the case for a group of incoming freshman in Baldwin County.
Ninety-one students of Baldwin High School’s Class of 2017 spent part of their summer soaking up knowledge. From studying Edgar Allen Poe to calculating algebraic equations, these rising freshman learned valuable lessons that will help them through this transition as part of the first every YES summer program.
“Going to the program helped us to remember, so when we go to the 9th grade we’ll remember what we learned in 8th grade,” incoming freshman Jaylon Tipton said.
YES stands for Youth Enrichment Services. The program funded by state grants helps struggling students in their academics. This summer teachers focused on math, science, and language arts.
“When you walk around the rooms and you see students engaged and learning and loving to do what they’re doing, it’s a victory,” Baldwin High School YES program coordinator Julie Cook said.
Cook adds these students are also getting a lesson on what it takes to be a Baldwin High Brave.
“They come knowing what is okay and what is not okay, how to dress, how not to dress,” she said. “They know where their rooms are located.”
Freshman year can be scary, but students say because of this summer program they feel ready for their first day of school.
“When you’re an incoming freshman, you need to know the teachers, you need to get to know people because its going to be your life for the next four years,” incoming freshman Siani Duggan said.
“They know we love them and that we have their back and we will help them with whatever they need,” Cook said. “I think it’s a comfort to to them to know there’s a safe place when they come through the door in the fall.”
Cook hopes the students will take these valuable lessons with them as they become the next class of rising stars.
The four week long summer program ended on Thursday. Students who participated are eligible for high school credit.
