US, UK Scientists Draw Up List of World’s Plants
LONDON – British and U.S. scientists say they’ve compiled
the most comprehensive list of land plant species ever published.
The massive compendium carries more than 1 million names
assigned to at least 300,000 different species of plants, from the
English daisy to the Ginkgo tree.
Researchers say the list unveiled Wednesday can be used to boost
conservation, trade and medicine by eliminating confusion stemming
from the fact that many plants go by several names.
The list was compiled and edited by botanists and computer
scientists at Kew Gardens in London and the Missouri Botanical
Garden in St. Louis.
