UPDATE: 2 Adults Confirmed Dead in South Bibb Plane Crash

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Two men are dead after a plane crash in South Bibb County. Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones previously reported a child was also among the dead, but he has now amended that statement.

58-year-old Anthony Cabeza of Greer, South Carolina and 71-year-old Julius Gilreath of Greenville, South Carolina took off in their single-engine Piper-32 plane from Apalachicola Municipal Airport in Apalachicola, FL headed for Greenville Downtown Airport.

Identification of the bodies were difficult, as they had been very badly burned in the crash.

Jones spoke to two women believed to be the wives of the two victims. Autopsies are scheduled for Wednesday or Thursday.

The coroner says the plane went by down on St. Clara Drive around 6:40 p.m.

Keith Holloway with the National Transportation Safety Board says the NTSB will be on the scene investigating Tuesday.

Houston County Fire Department, Macon-Bibb Fire Department, Bibb County Sherriff’s Office, Macon Police Department, Robins Air Force Base officials and Georgia State Patrol are all on the scene.

 The area is in close proximity to the runway at Robins Air Force base and Middle Georgia Regional Airport.

The crash site is a dense swamp area, and snakes and other elements are a concern, Jones said. Georgia Forestry Commission brought in a bulldozer to help cut a path to the plane. Officials also brought a light source in to assist throughout the night.
