Houston County Schools Get Big Bucks for New Software

WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Officials from Houston County Schools announced that they will be receiving more than a million dollars in new software for students.

31 Houston County elementary and middle schools will receive a combine $1.16 dollars from the new non profit organization, Americans for Schools.

Cindy Flesher is the Executive Director for Elementary Operations for Houston County Schools. She said what the new million dollar program, STRIDE Academy, will do for students.

“With STRIDE Academy a little bit of the difference is that they will have some clips that they watch, teachers teaching them the skills if they need extra assistances and support like that, Flesher said.”

School officials made the announcement at Westside Elementary School in Warner Robins.

The school is the first to receive the new software.

The non-profit will also continue its awards program that brings cash and technology to schools and also the program will award student essay contest winners.

Rex Gambill is the VP of Americans for Schools and believes if the program is successful; it could lead to bigger things.

“If we can prove in Houston County that we can get parents involved in supporting their kids and supporting educators then we can take it to the surrounding counties,” Gambill said. “We can take it across the state of Georgia and we could take it nationwide because everybody wants kids to succeed…if it’s successful, everybody wins.”

Houston County is the first district in the country that Americans for Schools is sponsoring. Flesher thinks the system’s teachers have done a great job educating and that attracted the non profit to step in, so students can excel.
