Splash Pad, 60-Foot Slide Among Grant-Funded Projects Coming Soon for College Hill Corridor Parks

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon’s College Hill Corridor will soon see some changes, thanks to nearly $250,000 in grant money.

Tuesday, the Community Foundation of Central Georgia awarded 11 grants as part of the Knight Foundation’s Neighborhood Challenge.

The grants will fund projects throughout the corridor, but most of them aim to improve the area’s parks.

Some of the projects include adding a splash pad at Daisy Park for those hot summer days and adding a 60-foot slide down the steep side of Coleman Hill Park.

The most costly project includes revamping one of the long diagonal trails that runs through Tattnall Square Park to make it more pedestrian friendly.

“One of the things that we know about parks is it’s important to have beautiful and usable parks to attract residents to the in-town area,” says Julia Wood with the Community Foundation of Central Georgia.

Another interesting addition to the corridor’s parks will be a 10-foot tall sculpture of the “I Love Macon” logo at Tower Park.  The sculpture will be made by Macon resident Jamie Ragan.

“Not only do I get to contribute in a big way to my hometown community, but I feel like I can help in uplifting and spreading the values of the city and having other people kind of understand what everything’s all about with progression and where we’re going,” says Ragan.

Now that the grant funding is in place, the projects are set to begin immediately.

Wood says in just three years, the foundation has awarded 101 grants worth $1.9 million.
