Georgia Cancer Centers Collect Bags for Foster Children

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Several Middle Georgia cancer centers are collecting bags to give to foster children as a way to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Georgia Cancer Specialists hosted its eleventh annual Totes to Tots suitcase drive on Friday. There are 24 GCS offices across the state, including three in Macon, Milledgeville, and Hawkinsville.

The program delivers new or nearly new backpacks and kid-sized suitcases to foster child in Georgia, from infants to teenagers. Since Totes for Tots started in 2003, GSC has collected and distributed more than 30,000 bags. Last year in Middle Georgia alone, more than 900 bags were collected.

GCS says the program originally was held on Martin Luther King Jr. Days as a way to honor Dr. King’s vision and give back to the community.

“I think children are certainly our future. This is certainly something that Dr. Martin Luther King would  be smiling on our efforts and I think its a great community service project,” Dr. Cheryl Jones with GCS in Macon, said.
