Golf Too Expensive? Try out Disc Golf at Perry’s Rozar Park

PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – There’s a new addition to Rozar Park in Perry, but the sport itself has been around for decades.

“Disc golf has been around since the 1970s,” says Amateur Master National Champion, Michelle Jones.  “It’s a fantastic family sport.  You get a lot of good exercise, but you don’t even know you’re exercising because it’s just so much fun.”

It’s fun in the sun with friends, or family, and it’s just like another 18-hole sport: ball golf, as disc golfers call it.

“Whereas you drive off from a tee-pad,” says Jones.  “You count the number of strokes it takes you to get into the basket, and that’s your score.  So if it’s a Par 3, for instance, and it only takes you two times to get there, you’ve got a Birdie.”

“If you’ve just got the itch to play golf, we live out here in Perry,” says David Falldine.  “We can just drive over here, play a couple rounds out here.  It kind of fulfills that desire to play real golf.”

If you want to get in on the fun, a set of discs are available at most sporting goods stores for about $25, and most courses, like the one in Perry, don’t charge you to play.

“It’s a lot of fun; it can be competitive, but also it’s cheap,” says Falldine.  “I mean, usually, it’s free.  Discs are cheap and it’s just a great thing to pass time.”

“You can start for $25 and then you can play for free all day, all the time,” says Clay Jones, Michelle’s husband.  “It’s just a great way to be with your family and come out and get some fresh air.”

Since the course in Perry opened, it’s been a hit with outdoor enthusiasts, and they expect their sport to get even bigger in the future.

“There’s just large masses of people and friends that are bringing new friends into it,” says Michelle Jones.  “You’re seeing new people out here every single day.  We talk to everyone we run into, so we try to grow the sport as well and those people are coming out, too.  So it’s really neat to see this exploding the way it is.”

Next weekend, they’re having a tournament at the Perry Disc Golf Course.

Registration is from 9-10 a.m. on Saturday, January 26th before a shotgun start at 10:15.

Each team will play two rounds, and it’s just $30 for a team of two to enter.  There will be cash prizes for 1st and 2nd place, but those amounts depend on the number of teams that enter.
