Bibb County Deputy Arrested on Theft, Fraud Charges

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Investigators with the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office arrested one of their own Tuesday afternoon around 4:30.

52-year-old Kerry Andre Woodard admitted to removing an EBT card from an inmate’s personal belongings to make personal financial transactions. Woodard was charged with Financial Transaction Card Theft, Financial Transaction Card Fraud, and Violation of Oath by Public Officer.

Upon an administrative hearing Tuesday afternoon Sheriff David Davis terminated Woodard’s employment.

“There is the integrity of the office that we have to maintain in that we also have to show that we’re not going to tolerate this type of behavior,” says Davis.

Davis says Woodard, who is a booking sergeant for the Bibb County Jail, stole around $4,000 dollars from the inmates account. When the sheriff was notified of the incident late last week, he  immediately launched internal and criminal investigations.

“Certainly whenever something like this happens, we have to take quick, and decisive action,” says Davis.

This wasn’t the first time Woodard’s been disciplined. A report from the Houston County Sheriff’s office shows Woodard was arrested and charged with writing a bad check. It happened at a Harvey’s Supermarket in 2009.

“Sheriff Modena took some disciplinary action on him at that time, and he got through all of that,” says Davis.

Sheriff Davis says Woodard was a good worker, and situations like this are always difficult.

“It’s very regrettable when we have to do a thing like that, we certainly don’t strive to have to terminate our employees or even have to discipline them.”

Woodard posted a $9,250 bond Tuesday around 5:45P.M. Woodard had been employed at the Bibb Sheriff’s Office since 2007.
