Candlelight Vigil Held in Downtown Macon for Sandy Hook Victims

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – At a time when the nation is looking for answers into the deadly shooting in Connecticut Friday, Macon leaders led citizens in a candlelight vigil praying for the families who lost loved ones.

At Rosa Parks Square this evening, city officials lit 20 candles, all held by some of Macon’s children, in honor of the 20 little ones who died so senselessly friday morning.

Six Macon City Council members lit their candles in honor of the six teachers who gave their lives trying to protect their students. Councilmen Henry Ficklin and Schlesinger led the group of dozens in prayer,
asking God to be with the families in this dark time.

Mayor Reichert echoed President Obama’s call for comprehensive reform on how guns are handled in the United States. “I am fully in support of looking at our mental health system and what support we offer there,” says Mayor Reichert, “and looking at gun laws that are already on the books that need to be enforced–Trying to close loopholes and background checks; and to try to look again at the national policy on assault weapons and high capacity magazines.”

The vigil was held in front of the large christmas tree in Rosa Parks Square, a sad reminder of those families who will celebrate the holidays without their loved ones.
