City Seeks Funds for Perry Animal Shelter

PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Perry Animal Control Officer Angie Reed said the animal shelter in Perry is overcrowded, rundown and needs major improvements. But she does the best she can with the makeshift building.

Reed has worked in animal control for three years now.

“It’s for a new shelter,” Reed said.

This time she feels Perry City Council is strongly considering the idea. City officials are meeting once again to talk about funding for a new animal shelter in Perry.

But there’s about $900,000 standing in the way.

The new animal shelter will be located on Big Indian Creek Road near Larry Walker Parkway. It is estimated to cost about $900,000. It’s an amount, Mayor Jimmy Faircloth said the city of Perry can’t afford. So after three years, of tabling the issues, he’s urging council to look at other sources of money. He hopes money from the Special Purpose Local Options Sales Tax 2012 may be the answer.

“It’s a higher priority than it’s been in the past,” Faircloth said, “but there’s also a lot other projects that are high priority.”

For Reed, she just hopes the animals stay on the agenda.
