Mercer Women’s Basketball Hits the Road to Take on Troy Tonight
MACON, Georgia (Mercer Sports) – The Mercer women’s basketball team hits the road for the first time in the 2012-13 campaign when it travels to Alabama to take on Troy on Wednesday evening at 8 p.m. at Trojan Arena.
Mercer (1-0) is coming off a season opening 57-50 win over Brevard and is trying to start a season with two-straight wins for the first time since the 2007-08 campaign.
Scouting the Opposition
Troy enters play on Wednesday evening after dropping its season opener on the road at Winthrop, 87-82. The Trojans are coached by first-year head coach Chanda Rigby, who inherited two starters back from a squad that went 2-26 last season. Simply putting the ball in the hoop posed as Troy’s main problem last season, as it ranked last in the Sun Belt Conference with a 49.9 points per game average. That problem seems to be in the past through one game this season, however, as the Trojan’s 82 points against Winthrop were the most by a Troy team since scoring 84 against Middle Tennessee State in 2009. Freshman Ashley Beverly-Kelley led the Trojans in scoring against Winthrop, scoring 19 points in 7-of-14 shooting from the field.
Last Time Out
The Mercer women’s basketball team opened its 2012-13 season with a 57-50 win over Brevard on Nov. 9 at Hawkins Arena. Junior Kendra Grant paced all Mercer (1-0) scorers with 14 points and six rebounds while sophomore Alicia Williams joined her in double-figures, netting 12 points to go along with four assists. Sophomore Teanna Robinson had a career night for the Bears in a starting role. The Grayson, Ga. native set career-highs in points (9), rebounds (9), blocks (2) and minutes played (23) in a winning effort.
Game Notes
Mercer is currently on a three-game winning streak after emerging victorious in its 2012-13 season opener against Brevard and its final two contests of the 2011-12 campaign against Lipscomb and Belmont. The Bears are one of just six teams in the nation on a three-game winning streak or better as we begin the 2012-13 campaign.
