Hummingbird Manager Takes Over Day-to-Day Duties at Cox Capitol Theatre
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Cox Capitol Theatre Board of Directors announces Tim Obelgoner, the general manager of Hummingbird Stage and Tap Room in downtown Macon, has taken over management duties at the theater.
Obelgoner and his staff will absorb the existing staff and add additional staff in order to dramatically increase the utilization of the downtown landmark.
“The Cox Capitol Theatre has approached us here at the Hummingbird with the idea of creating a new management staff and operations staff for the Cox Capitol Theatre to take them to the next level,’ says Obelgoner.
The president of the theatre, Gene Dunwoody, Jr., says the board approached Obelgoner because of his success at the Hummingbird.
“Tim’s got a lot of experience over the years, bringing in a lot of different shows,” says Dunwoody, Jr. “We’re hoping to increase the utilization of the theatre.”
Obelgoner says the partnership will open up more opportunities for popular bands to play downtown.
“One thing that we continually run into here at the Hummingbird is we have a lot of bands that come through Macon looking for a place to play,” says Obelgoner. “They may not big enough to fill up a coliseum or an auditorium, but they’re still too big for the Hummingbird.”
One of Obelgoner’s main goals in taking over the theatre is to bring in a national act at least once a month.
“He expects to bring people here that are a little bigger,” says Tony Long, Sr., a member on the Cox Capitol Theatre board.
“We’re in negotiations with several groups now,” says Obelgoner. “I’d really rather not go into details until we have something finalized with them, but it’s going to be special.”
A special partnership that will benefit a historic landmark.
“Visiting Cox Capitol Theatre in the past, I’ve loved the venue,” says Ruth Ashmore, the new director of sales for the theatre. “It’s a great place. I think that it’s gonna be an awesome place to be able to revitalize and bring shows and bring things in so that the community can actually enjoy it.”
