Houston County Schools Raise Lunch Prices

PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- Houston County School Board members voted to increase school lunches by 25 cents to meet federal requirements.

The Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 requires schools that have lunches for less than $2.51 to gradually raise prices to be in line with reimbursements the system gets from the US Department of Agriculture for students who qualify for reduced or free lunches.

Elementary Students in Houston County will pay $2.25 starting next year, and middle and high school students will pay $2.50.

According to Superintendent Dr. James Hines, the increase will be about $45 a year.

This is the first time the Houston County School system has raised its lunch prices since the 2008-2009 school year.

Reduced meal prices and breakfast prices will remain the same.
