Four Cases Of Salmonella Poisoning Confirmed In Georgia

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed 93 cases of salmonella poisoning in 19 states, four of which have been located within the state of Georgia.

According to the C.D.C. website, the outbreak is currently being investigated as possibly being linked to the consumption of sushi. The C.D.C. and the F.D.A. are still investigating exactly what kind of sushi, or if it related to a specific brand.

41 NBC spoke with Dr. David Harvey at the North Central Health District in Macon. There are currently no confirmed cases of an outbreak in the middle Georgia region. The four cases in Georgia have been identified in the metro Atlanta area.

Of the 93 cases reported, 10 people have been hospitalized from the outbreak.

Most cases of salmonella are characterized by vomiting and diarrhea, and symptoms will last between four and seven days. Dr. Harvey says most cases of salmonella will not hospitalize people.

The C.D.C. and F.D.A. will put out a notice if the outbreak becomes more severe, or if the outbreak is linked to a specific food.

The easiest ways to keep healthy is by washing your hands after touching raw meats. Also, check the expiration dates of sushi and other raw meats when making a purchase at the store.
