Middle Georgia Comes Together Over Trayvon Martin Tragedy

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The death of Trayvon Martin continues to bring the Middle Georgia community closer together. Hundreds of people packed Coleman Hill in downtown Macon for a candlelight vigil Wednesday.

Speakers at the ceremony talked about the timeline of events since the 17 year old Florida boy was shot and killed in late February.  Participants ate Skittles, the candy in Martin’s hand when he died, and they donned hoodies like the one the teen was wearing that day.

Members of the Macon community called Martin’s death a senseless tragedy.  Even though this incident is causing national controversy, here in Middle Georgia supporters say they’re uniting with people from all walks of life.

“It’s an unfortunate tragedy. It gives America an opportunity to unify behind a common cause because this isn’t just a black thing, this isn’t just a white thing, this is a human thing,” said Michael Wilson, Macon.
