MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Penny L. Elkins is the first woman to lead Mercer University in its nearly 200-year history, a milestone recognized Thursday during her formal investiture as the university’s 19th president.

A Mercer graduate, Elkins has spent more than 30 years working in education, beginning her career as a third-grade teacher before moving into higher education leadership.

She has also spent more than 25 years at Mercer, helping lead enrollment growth and develop programs to support students. Thursday’s ceremony marked a new chapter for Elkins and the university.

“The presidency is really about understanding that you get to Shepard the Mercer Mission and vision for the institution,” Elkins said. “My most meaningful moment was that I happened to be a very proud double bear myself, and a product of this institution. I earned 10 years here as a faculty member so, this is very much a part of my calling, a part of what I have committed my life to do, and today was a beautiful culmination of that.”

Elkins says her goal is to build on Mercer University’s legacy while continuing to create opportunities for students. As the university’s 19th president, she plans to focus on student success, growth and the future of higher education.
