Statewide emergency issued in Georgia ahead of Hurricane Isaias

ATLANTA, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has issued a state of emergency for the entire state ahead of expected impacts from Hurricane Isaias.

Kemp is urging Georgians to prepare now by gathering food, water, batteries and other emergency supplies. He is also encouraging people to secure their homes before conditions worsen.

“As we always do with weather events, we’re hoping for the best but preparing for the worst,” said Governor Brian Kemp.

The storm could bring flash flooding, isolated tornadoes, and damaging winds to parts of Georgia.

The state of emergency allows Georgia to prepare resources ahead of the storm, including the possible activation of up to 500 National Guard troops if needed.

Emergency management officials are also encouraging people to have multiple ways to receive weather alerts and to rely on trusted media sources for updated information.

“As we closely monitor this system, ensuring the safety of all Georgians is our top priority,” said GEMA/HS Director Josh Lamb. “That’s why GEMA/HS is working around the clock in coordination with local, state, and federal partners to ensure that we are fully prepared for any potential impacts. All parts of the state could see impacts from this storm, and we have the resources ready to assist them if that is the case.”

Residents should continue monitoring the forecast and be ready to act if warnings are issued for their area.
