Sheriff: Adults who knew teens had guns could face charges after Macon park shooting
Bibb County Schools increased safety measures and activated crisis support teams, while the Uvalde Foundation for Kids offered a reward of up to $5,000 for information.
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Bibb County Sheriff David Davis says adults could face charges if investigators determine they knew teens had guns before a birthday gathering moved to Carolyn Crayton Park, where 12 teenagers were shot early Sunday.
Davis says the gathering started as an 18-year-old’s birthday party at an Airbnb in Jones County. After the Airbnb owner found out guns were present, Davis says the owner asked the group to leave.
The group then went to Carolyn Crayton Park, where another group showed up. Davis says that’s when the shooting happened.
Investigators are working to find those responsible. Davis also says parents and guardians of those involved could face charges if investigators determine they knew guns were present.
“When we find out who did this, and we’re gonna find out who did it, I guarantee you some adult loved ones or some guardians knew they had guns,” he said. “Not a doubt in my mind, and if we can charge the adult in connection with this we’re gonna do that too.”
Macon-Bibb County Mayor Lester Miller says he is reaching out to faith-based and community groups following the shooting to help support young people.
Miller also says those responsible need to be held accountable.
“Not sure who the shooter was, not sure what the certain situation is, but they got to be held accountable for their actions,” Miller said.
Miller also hopes the teens who were injured and those who know the people involved will decide they do not want to be involved in violence.
Bibb County Schools Superintendent Dr. Dan Sims shared a message on Facebook saying there is no information linking the shooting to a school or school-sponsored activity.
The district says it has taken additional measures to increase safety and activated crisis support teams for students and staff.
The Uvalde Foundation for Kids is also offering support following the shooting.
The foundation is offering an emergency fund, a reward of up to $5,000 for information and 24-hour peer and crisis support.
