Sources tell CNN the negotiations are creating divisions among some of the Democratic-led states that brought the lawsuit two months ago.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta, who has been leading the 12-state coalition, has been pressing to reach a settlement with Paramount in recent days as the company has threatened to leave California.
Meanwhile, rising costs are prompting some parents with young children to turn to their own parents and grandparents for financial help.
A new Bank of Montreal survey found about 37% of parents with young children expect financial support from their parents or grandparents over the next year to help cover everyday expenses.
On Wall Street, investors are coming off a third consecutive week of losses for the Dow, its worst stretch since March.
The losses come after the Federal Reserve raised interest rates last week for the first time in three years.
New data is also drawing attention to federal student loan repayment rates.
A new analysis from NPR found at least 500 colleges and universities across the country where at least 40% of students are not paying their federal student loans.
Some schools, including Construction Training Center in South Carolina and Legends Barber College in Texas, have nonpayment rates between 70% and 80%.
According to the analysis, taxpayer-backed funding accounts for more than two-thirds of the institutions’ revenue.
And Costco has a Halloween hit on its hands.
Shoppers have been buying a life-sized, 5.5-pound Frankenstein head made entirely of Belgian chocolate. The treat comes with a wooden mallet that shoppers can use to smash the chocolate open and reach gummy candy inside.
The Frankenstein head has sold out on Costco’s website and at select stores, sending some shoppers to eBay, where reseller prices have climbed as high as $100.
