Robins Air Force Base honors 9/11 victims, first responders on 25th anniversary

Service members and community leaders gathered at Robins Air Force Base to honor those killed in the Sept. 11 attacks and the first responders who answered the call.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Robins Air Force Base honored the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and the heroes who responded, with a remembrance ceremony Friday.

Service members and community leaders gathered to reflect on the attacks and honor the first responders who showed extraordinary courage that day.

Warner Robins Mayor LaRhonda Patrick says she remembers the day like it was yesterday and hopes people will continue to remember it for years to come.

“As a college student just trying to attack adulthood,” she said. “Then after all that aftermath that happened with my family, deploying multiple times, and just seeing how the world changed. A huge feeling of patriotism at the same time, and being proud of how we resounded to that tragedy and hoping that we continue having that unity and even get stronger in the years ahead.”

Deputy Fire Chief Cody McBrayer says the anniversary is a day to honor the first responders who gave so much.

“25 years ago, our nation faced an attack that changed armed force history,” he said. “First responders, service members and civilians demonstrated extraordinary bravery. Their actions continue to inspire everyone who serves today.”

Patrick says she hopes those who weren’t alive for 9/11 or don’t remember it will take time to educate themselves.

“No matter what our differences are, we’re still Americans and we’re still so proud to be in the best country in the world,” Patrick said. “And we have to support all of those who protect, defend and put their life on the line, so we can enjoy the freedoms that others sacrificed for us to have.”

Robins Air Force Base says the memories of September 11 remain strong and that it will continue to honor those who died, those who served and the promise to never forget.
