Houston County School District proposes school zone changes

HOUSTON COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The Houston County School District is proposing changes to attendance zones for several elementary and middle schools beginning with the 2027-2028 school year.

The proposal was introduced during the Houston County Board of Education meeting September 8. The district said the proposed changes are intended to address enrollment growth, balance enrollment and create more consistent feeder patterns between schools.

Based on current enrollment, the district estimates the proposed elementary school changes would affect:

• 125 students moving from Centerville Elementary to Eagle Springs Elementary School.
• 15 students moving from Kings Chapel Elementary to Matt Arthur Primary and Elementary Schools.
• 25 students moving from Tucker Elementary to Langston Road Primary and Elementary Schools.

The proposed middle school changes would affect an estimated:

• 555 students moving from Bonaire Middle School to Veterans Middle School.
• 35 students moving from Huntington Middle School to Bonaire Middle School.
• 205 students moving from Perry Middle School to Veterans Middle School.
• 35 students moving from Perry Middle School to Mossy Creek Middle School.

The proposal also includes the attendance zone for Veterans Middle School, which is scheduled to open in August 2027.

Students currently attending a school affected by the proposed changes would have the option to remain at their current school through the highest grade offered at that school. Families choosing that option would be responsible for transportation. The district would provide transportation for students attending the school assigned to their residence under the new attendance zones.

“As Houston County continues to grow, we have a responsibility to plan ahead, balance enrollment across our schools, and make the best use of the resources we have,” Superintendent Dr. Richard Rogers said. “Our goal is to take a student and community-friendly approach to rezoning by making thoughtful adjustments that better align our feeder patterns and, whenever possible, allow students to stay together with their peers as they move from elementary to middle and high school. We believe these proposed changes will help us meet the needs of our growing community while continuing to do what is best for our students.”

The district will hold four parent meetings about the proposed changes.

The first meeting will be September 21 at 6 p.m. in the Perry Middle School cafeteria for students proposed to move from Perry Middle to Veterans Middle and Mossy Creek Middle.

A meeting for Bonaire Middle students proposed to move to Veterans Middle and Huntington Middle students proposed to move to Bonaire Middle will be September 22 at 6 p.m. in the Veterans High School auditorium.

A meeting for Centerville Elementary students proposed to move to Eagle Springs Elementary will be September 29 at 6 p.m. in the Eagle Springs Elementary School cafeteria.

The final meeting will be October 1 at 6 p.m. in the Perry High School auditorium for Kings Chapel Elementary students proposed to move to Matt Arthur Primary and Elementary and Tucker Elementary students proposed to move to Langston Road Primary and Elementary.

The Houston County Board of Education is scheduled to vote on the proposed school zone changes during its October 6 meeting at 1 p.m. at the district’s central office in Perry.

The district said proposed zoning maps are available online and QR codes linking to the maps will be posted at each school. Parents of currently enrolled students included in the proposed changes will also be notified about how the proposal could affect their families.
