GDC: Gang-related fight at Wilcox State Prison leaves inmate dead
The Georgia Department of Corrections says the altercation is believed to have been gang-related and was contained to one dorm.
ABBEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- An inmate died, and nine others were injured after a fight involving several inmates at Wilcox State Prison, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.
The GDC confirmed the altercation happened Sept. 3 and is believed to have been gang-related.
According to the department, the incident was contained to one dorm.
Inmate pronounced dead at scene
The GDC identified the inmate who died as Maurice Brown.
Brown was pronounced deceased at the scene.
His body was turned over to the county coroner and will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab to determine the official cause of death.
According to the GDC, Brown was convicted of kidnapping out of Fulton County and was serving a 25-year sentence. His maximum release date was listed as 2034.
Other offenders taken to hospitals
The GDC said seven offenders involved in the fight were taken to local hospitals for treatment.
Two offenders were taken by life-flight with life-threatening injuries.
Five others were taken by EMS with non-life-threatening injuries.
Two additional offenders were treated by medical staff at the facility for non-life-threatening injuries.
No staff injuries were reported.
Facility placed on lockdown
Out of an abundance of caution, Wilcox State Prison has been placed on lockdown until further notice.
The death is being investigated by the GDC’s Office of Professional Standards as standard procedure.
The GDC said additional details are not available because the investigation is ongoing.
