ACE hosts Southwest Friday after dramatic comeback win

The Gryphons scored three unanswered touchdowns in the final six minutes to beat Washington County last week.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The ACE Gryphons will try to improve to 3-0 Friday night when they host Southwest after a dramatic comeback win last week.

ACE trailed Washington County 20-3 with six minutes left before scoring three unanswered touchdowns to win.

“It was huge and really speaks volumes about this group of seniors who’ve been together for so long,” head coach Keith Hatcher said. “To be down in a game like that with six minutes left, come back, three unanswered touchdowns, pretty special. I’ve been coaching for a long time, and I haven’t been a part of any like that.”

Senior quarterback Ace Hatcher said the comeback showed what the Gryphons can accomplish in difficult situations.

“I think it just shows that this season has an opportunity to be really special because I mean we are down 20 to 3 with six minutes left,” he said. “I mean it wasn’t a whole lot of hope, but we were able to come together and get the win. It was awesome.”

The Gryphons practiced Wednesday afternoon as they prepared for the Southwest Patriots.

Senior defensive back Huck Thompson said the challenge following an emotional comeback is avoiding a slow start in the next game.

“We have no easy games this year, so gotta come out every game with the same plan and same mentality,” he said.
