1 dead, 2 hospitalized after Highway 87 crash in Monroe County

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says its preliminary investigation indicates the Tesla hydroplaned into the Kia’s path.

MONROE COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — One person died and two others were taken to a hospital after a crash Thursday near Plant Scherer in Monroe County.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 5:42 p.m. to a crash involving a Tesla Model Y and Kia Sorento on Highway 87 near the plant’s entrance.

The sheriff’s office says its preliminary investigation indicates the Tesla hydroplaned into the path of the Kia.

The driver and passenger in the Kia were taken to a Macon hospital. Their conditions were not released.

The Tesla’s sole occupant was pronounced dead at the scene. The sheriff’s office has not released the person’s name.

The crash remains under investigation.
