Macon-Bibb hearings begin Friday on rate that counts as 9.28% tax increase

The tentative 9.575 mill rate would add an estimated $60 for an owner-occupied home valued at $200,000.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Macon-Bibb County residents will have three opportunities beginning Friday to comment on a tentatively adopted millage rate of 9.575 mills.

According to the public hearing agenda, the proposed rate is 0.813 mills above the 8.762 mill rollback rate. The agenda classifies the difference as a 9.28% property tax increase.

The 9.28% figure compares the proposed rate with the rollback rate.

Macon-Bibb estimates the proposal would add about $60 for a home with a fair market value of $200,000. The estimated increase for a non-homestead property with the same value is about $65.

The first public hearing is scheduled for noon Friday, August 28, in the Commission Chambers at Macon City Hall, located at 700 Poplar Street.

Two additional hearings are scheduled at the same location Tuesday, September 1, at 9 a.m. and 6:01 p.m., before a final vote.
