(NBC)- President Donald Trump returned from Las Vegas after promoting his economic agenda as Republicans look to build momentum ahead of this fall’s midterm elections.

Speaking in Nevada, Trump said his administration has turned the country around in the past 18 months, even as polls continue to show many Americans remain dissatisfied with the economy and the ongoing war with Iran.

The president also criticized Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive candidate who supports Medicare for All and abolishing ICE. Trump argued Republicans are better positioned against progressive candidates, while repeatedly attacking El-Sayed during his remarks.

El-Sayed responded by accusing Trump of focusing on political attacks instead of addressing affordability and other economic concerns facing Americans.

Meanwhile, AAA reports the national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline has climbed above $4.08, with higher energy costs largely tied to the conflict involving Iran.

Trump said negotiations aimed at ending the war are progressing and insisted he wants to avoid broader destruction, though he acknowledged there is no guarantee talks will succeed.

Iran, however, continues to deny that it is engaged in direct negotiations with the United States to end the conflict.
