Bibb County school zone cameras go live Monday with no warning period

Officials said school zone cameras will be active during school hours whenever school zone lights are flashing.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is reminding motorists to use extra caution as students head back to school Monday, Aug. 3.

Officials said school zone cameras will be active during school hours whenever school zone lights are flashing. Drivers traveling more than 10 mph over the posted school zone speed limit while the lights are flashing will receive a citation. No warning period will be offered.

The sheriff’s office said its C.I.T.E. Unit will be monitoring school zones to help keep students safe.

Deputies are encouraging drivers to slow down and obey posted speed limits in school zones, watch for stopped school buses loading and unloading children, and be alert for students walking or riding bicycles near schools.

Under Georgia law, drivers must stop for school buses when the bus’s flashing lights and stop arm are activated unless they are traveling on the opposite side of a divided highway separated by a barrier or median.

The sheriff’s office also advises parents to avoid dropping off or picking up children across the street from schools to reduce the need for students to cross busy roadways.

Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time during the morning and afternoon hours, as traffic is expected to increase around schools during arrival and dismissal.
