Wheeler County K-12 School reopens after anonymous bomb threat

School officials said the building was cleared, and no credible threat was found.

WHEELER COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Wheeler County K-12 School reopened Thursday afternoon after an anonymous bomb threat prompted an evacuation earlier in the day.

According to a statement from Wheeler County Schools, the district received an anonymous bomb threat Thursday morning. Out of an abundance of caution and in accordance with its safety plan, staff evacuated the building.

The school district worked with the Wheeler County Sheriff’s Office, the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to investigate the threat. Authorities also conducted a thorough search of the school using trained personnel and search dogs.

School officials said the building was cleared, and no credible threat was found. The building reopened at noon.

In its statement, Wheeler County Schools thanked its public safety partners and staff for their swift response and said it looks forward to welcoming students for the first day of school Friday.

The investigation into the source of the anonymous threat is ongoing.
