Violent storms slammed communities across the Northeast Tuesday, bringing heavy rain, flash flooding and dangerous conditions to millions of people.

(CNN)- Violent storms slammed communities across the Northeast Tuesday, bringing heavy rain, flash flooding and dangerous conditions to millions of people.

Some areas were forecast to receive more than a month’s worth of rain through the night, with flash flood watches stretching from Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey into parts of New England.

Flooding also reached Maryland, where high water left vehicles partially submerged on streets in Baltimore.

In Coalport, Pennsylvania, crews rescued three people and two dogs from a home as floodwaters rose.

The destructive weather extended into the Washington, D.C., area, where a massive tree crashed into a home during the storms.

Farther south, heavy rain reached the Carolinas. In Charlotte, downpours became so intense that the city’s skyline was temporarily obscured.

A public meeting in Asheville was also interrupted by a tornado warning, prompting an evacuation.

The latest round of severe weather comes as parts of the Midwest continue recovering from storms earlier in the week. The National Weather Service confirmed at least four tornadoes struck the Chicago area Monday.
