(CNN)- President Donald Trump is traveling to Turkey this week for the NATO summit, where he will meet with leaders from North America and Europe following the nation’s 250th Independence Day celebrations.

The summit comes at a pivotal time for the alliance, as NATO members continue to navigate ongoing security challenges and questions about the future of U.S. involvement under the Trump administration.

President Trump has repeatedly questioned whether the United States should remain as committed to NATO, arguing that the U.S. spends disproportionately more on the alliance than other member nations.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte visited the White House last month in an effort to strengthen relations ahead of the summit, while allies continue to seek reassurance about America’s long-term commitment.

Among the expected topics of discussion are the latest U.S.-Iran peace efforts, security in the Strait of Hormuz, Russia’s war in Ukraine and continued NATO support for Kyiv.

The summit also follows a nearly 90-minute phone call Saturday between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Russia’s Foreign Ministry described the conversation as “businesslike and highly constructive.” The White House did not immediately comment on the call.
