Supreme Court Weighs Birthright Citizenship As Trump Scores Mixed Legal Victories

(NBC)- All eyes are on the U.S. Supreme Court as justices prepare to issue a closely watched ruling on birthright citizenship.

The case centers on President Donald Trump’s executive order signed on his first day back in office that would end automatic U.S. citizenship for children born to undocumented immigrants unless at least one parent is a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident. Opponents argue the order violates the 14th Amendment, which has long been interpreted to guarantee birthright citizenship. Lower courts blocked the order, sending the case to the nation’s highest court.

The expected ruling comes after the Supreme Court handed down a series of major decisions Monday that delivered mixed results for the Trump administration.

In one ruling, the court’s conservative majority said the president can remove members of independent federal agencies, including former Federal Trade Commission Commissioner Rebecca Slaughter, finding longstanding limits on the president’s removal power were unconstitutional.

However, the court declined—for now—to allow Trump to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, preserving the central bank’s longstanding independence from political influence.

The court also rejected a challenge backed by the Republican National Committee over Mississippi’s mail-in voting law, allowing the state to continue counting ballots that arrive up to five days after Election Day as long as they are postmarked by Election Day. The decision could have implications for election procedures in other states ahead of the midterm elections.
