New Details Revealed In Disappearance Of Nancy Guthrie

(CNN)- New details have emerged in the abduction of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of NBC “Today” anchor Savannah Guthrie, more than 20 weeks after she was reported missing.

According to law enforcement sources briefed on the investigation, a note sent to media outlets in February claimed that Guthrie had died. The message followed an earlier note demanding millions of dollars in ransom.

Investigators believed both communications were authentic and originated from the person or people responsible for the kidnapping.

Former NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism John Miller said the first note contained details about Guthrie’s home that investigators believed only those involved would know.

According to law enforcement sources, the second note claimed the kidnappers did not intend to kill Guthrie but said she died shortly after being taken from her home near Tucson.

The message reportedly indicated the kidnappers would not contact anyone again.

At the time, the Guthrie family released an emotional public video appealing for information.

The contents of the second note were known to CNN and a Tucson television station that received both messages but were withheld from the public at the request of the FBI and the family.

More than 20 weeks after Guthrie disappeared on Feb. 1, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department says the investigation remains active and ongoing.

Authorities have not announced any arrests or identified any suspects in the case.
