The celebration will take place June 19 at the St. Thomas AME Church fellowship hall and June 20 at James A. Colson Park.

HAWKINSVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Hawkinsville residents will gather later this month for the community’s fifth annual Juneteenth celebration, featuring two days of free activities focused on health, education and family fun.

The celebration will take place June 19 at the St. Thomas AME Church fellowship hall and June 20 at James A. Colson Park. Event organizers, Lynn Johnson and Bernice Banks, say this year’s theme is wellness and thriving, with programming centered on physical, mental and financial well-being.

Community members are invited to attend opening ceremonies beginning at 10 a.m. each day, with activities continuing until 5 p.m. Organizers describe the event as communitywide and family friendly.

The events will include free health screenings, medication education and services related to behavioral health, addiction recovery, dementia care, marriage and family counseling, and domestic violence support. Attendees will also have opportunities to participate in exercise and dance activities, learn about gardening, discuss financial literacy and civic engagement, and adopt pets.

On June 20, activities will move to James A. Colson Park. The day’s events will continue the wellness theme with discussions on mental health, Medicare, homeownership, financial management and recent changes to voting rights laws. Family activities will include a water slide, petting goats, ball games and other recreational opportunities.

Organizers say admission is free both days, and attendees will receive a complimentary bag lunch. Prize giveaways are also planned.
