Montezuma police arrest suspect in stabbing investigation

Police say the suspect fled before officers arrived and was arrested the following morning.

MONTEZUMA, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A man has been arrested after police say a homeowner was stabbed multiple times during a domestic disturbance in Montezuma.

According to the Montezuma Police Department, officers responded around 8:55 p.m. Wednesday to a home on Vienna Road.

Investigators say officers found the homeowner with multiple lacerations and stab wounds. Officers and EMS personnel rendered aid at the scene before the victim was taken to Perry Hospital for treatment. Police have not provided an update on the victim’s condition.

Police say the suspect, later identified as 24-year-old Demero Schofield, fled before officers arrived. Schofield was located and arrested Thursday morning. Officers say they also recovered the weapon believed to have been used in the assault.

Schofield is charged with burglary, theft by taking and aggravated assault. Police say Schofield acted alone and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

“Our prayers go out to the victim in this case, and we pray for his speedy recovery,” Chief Eric Finch said. “I am proud of our staff. We developed a plan, and they executed it professionally, which allowed us to apprehend Mr. Schofield without incident. I would also like to thank all of the first responders who assisted in this case. Their teamwork, dedication, and commitment to public safety are greatly appreciated.”
