Tornadoes tear through Mississippi as severe weather slams South

(CNN)- Multiple tornadoes ripped through parts of Mississippi overnight, leaving behind damaged homes, blocked highways and widespread power outages as severe weather swept across the South.
Video from the storm aftermath showed toppled trees, debris-covered roads and extensive destruction in several communities. One large tornado knocked down trees across a highway, making travel nearly impossible in some areas. The storms also brought down power lines, leaving tens of thousands of homes and businesses across Mississippi without electricity late Wednesday, according to PowerOutage.us.
In one hard-hit area, fallen trees blocked roads near a mobile home park where authorities reported residents may have been trapped. Dangerous conditions slowed rescue efforts as crews worked to reach affected neighborhoods.
The severe weather system stretched across much of the South, bringing strong thunderstorms and flood threats to several states. At one point, flood watches covered more than 10 million people. Parts of Alabama experienced significant flooding during the storms. In Montgomery, flooding forced the evacuation of the Alabama State House on Wednesday as heavy rain moved through the area.
Meanwhile, other parts of the country are still recovering from previous rounds of severe weather.
In Wisconsin, residents continue cleaning up after last month’s flooding as water levels slowly recede.
“Coming back in, we still had six inches of water around the house,” Wisconsin resident Amber Haning said.
Haning said floodwaters inside her home previously reached nearly three feet deep.
