(NBC)- A community in Shreveport is reeling after a devastating act of violence that left eight children dead and multiple others injured.
Authorities have identified the suspect as Shamar Elkins, who police say is responsible for killing eight children across three homes on Sunday. Seven of the victims were his own children, while the eighth was a cousin.
The children—three boys and five girls—ranged in age from 3 to 11 years old.
Police say the suspect first shot his wife, the mother of his children, leaving her with very serious injuries. He then went to another residence where he shot and killed the children, along with another woman—the mother of the eighth child—who also suffered life-threatening injuries.
“There’s another female that was in this residence that has life-threatening injuries,” said Cpl. Chris Bordelon with the Shreveport Police Department.
After the shootings, authorities say Elkins carjacked a vehicle and led officers on a chase into nearby Bossier Parish. Police say officers fired their weapons during the pursuit, and the suspect was killed.
Officials described the incident as “domestic in nature.”
Local leaders say the tragedy highlights the devastating impact of domestic violence.
“These are the tragedies when there are domestic violence or domestic disturbances in our community,” said Shreveport City Council member Tabatha Taylor.
The killings have left the community in shock, with many calling for greater awareness and use of available resources to prevent similar incidents.
“Please utilize every resource… this family and this community needs you,” Taylor said.
As the investigation continues, residents are coming together to grieve the loss of the young lives and support the families affected by the tragedy.
