MONROE COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A months-long drug investigation spanning multiple counties in Georgia has led to dozens of arrests, according to law enforcement.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Butts County Sheriff’s Office conducted a joint investigation, called Operation Gatekeeper, targeting a large-scale drug trafficking organization operating in north Monroe County and south Butts County.

The investigation began in February 2026 after Monroe County deputies identified a suspect they said was bringing large quantities of drugs, including fentanyl and methamphetamine, into the area. Authorities said the case quickly expanded beyond Monroe and Butts counties, eventually stretching across metro Atlanta and into neighboring states.

With help from multiple agencies, including the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Georgia State Patrol, investigators said they were able to dismantle what they described as an entire drug network, not just individual dealers.

During the investigation, deputies seized multiple pounds of illegal drugs, including methamphetamine, cocaine, fentanyl and marijuana. Investigators also recovered firearms, with some drugs linked to a larger supply chain outside the region.

Officials said more than 30 people have been arrested so far, with a total of 41 suspects identified. Deputies have taken arrest warrants for more than 40 individuals.

As of April 16, 2026, 30 people have been arrested, and additional arrests are expected in connection with the case. According to the sheriff’s office, all those arrested are facing charges related to trafficking illegal narcotics under the RICO Act.

Butts County Sheriff Gary Long said the operation should serve as a warning.

“This is one thing I want to make clear to the drug dealers in the state of Georgia. If your poison that you distribute in any way comes into Monroe County or Butts County, by all means we are going to find you. We are going to disassemble your organization piece by piece and we are not going to stop, and your next stop will be the Department of Corrections.”

Authorities said the operation is ongoing and they expect to make additional arrests as the investigation continues.
