Macon ranks among highest foreclosure rates in U.S., new report finds
New data shows rising foreclosure activity locally and across Georgia

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- Macon is among the areas with the highest foreclosure rates in the country, according to a new housing market report.
Data released by ATTOM shows the Macon metro area had one foreclosure filing for every 492 housing units in the first quarter of 2026, placing it among the highest rates nationwide.
The statistical metro area traditionally includes Bibb, Crawford, Jones, Monroe, and Twiggs Counties.
Georgia also sees a rise in foreclosure activity
The report also highlights broader trends across Georgia, where foreclosure activity is increasing.
Georgia recorded 4,356 foreclosure starts in the first quarter, ranking among the top states in the nation.
Overall, one in every 998 housing units in Georgia had a foreclosure filing during the quarter.
Foreclosures rising nationwide
Nationwide, foreclosure activity continued to climb.
ATTOM reported 118,727 properties with foreclosure filings in the first quarter, up 6% from the previous quarter and 26% from a year ago.
The report also showed foreclosure starts increased 20% year-over-year, while bank repossessions rose 45% compared to last year.
What’s driving the increase
ATTOM CEO Rob Barber said the increase may point to growing financial pressure for some homeowners.
“While volumes remain below historical peaks, the continued rise… suggests financial pressure may be building for some homeowners,” Barber said.
Despite the increase, foreclosure levels remain lower than historic highs.
However, analysts say the steady rise over recent quarters could signal a housing market adjusting to broader economic conditions.
