Oklahoma Principal Stops Armed Suspect At High School

(NBC)- Newly released video shows the dramatic and dangerous moments an armed suspect entered a high school in Pauls Valley—before being stopped by a quick-thinking principal.

Authorities say a man, identified as 20-year-old Victor Hawkins, a former student, walked into Pauls Valley High School carrying a pistol.

Moments later, Principal Kirk Moore is seen emerging from a nearby doorway and tackling the suspect in an effort to stop the threat.

During the chaos, Moore was shot, but officials say he still managed to subdue the suspect and force him to drop the weapon. Another staff member then quickly secured the gun.

Police say Moore’s actions likely prevented a much more tragic outcome.

“It doesn’t surprise me the actions that he took, but it is amazing,” said Pauls Valley Police Chief Don May. “There’s not a doubt in my mind that he saved kids’ lives.”

Video from the scene also appears to show a student slipping out of the area as Moore intervened.

In a statement, Moore said he relied on training and instinct in the moment.

“Like so many educators around the country, we prepare for these events,” he said. “I am grateful that my instincts and training, as well as God’s hand, were available to me.”

According to an affidavit, investigators say the suspect told authorities he was inspired by the Columbine High School massacre.

Hawkins now faces multiple charges, including shooting with intent to kill.

Despite the terrifying incident, no fatalities were reported—something the community credits to the principal’s heroic actions.
