MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Magnolia Soapbox Derby is set to return to downtown Macon this weekend, bringing high-speed races, live entertainment and family-friendly activities to the city.

The event is scheduled for April 11, with the first race beginning at 11 a.m. at the hill on Magnolia Street.

Organizers say the race will feature teams from local high schools, professional teams and community members.

There are seven schools competing and a total of 10 teams.

J.D. Dunston, president and co-director of the Magnolia Soapbox Derby, says the event unites the Macon community through speed, science, creativity and community.

The free event will also feature food trucks, live entertainment and a STEM zone.

Dunston adds that attendees can also enjoy a drum performance and a dance performance.

Charlotte Storey, race team registration chair for the Magnolia Soapbox Derby, says the annual family-friendly event draws thousands from around the region each year to participate in or watch the races.

The event will take place rain or shine.
