FORSYTH, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- A severe thunderstorm early Thursday caused widespread damage to power lines and roadways in the city of Forsyth, leading to several power outages and multiple roadway hazards.

City officials say the storm damaged power infrastructure and knocked down trees across several areas of the city.

Police, fire, public works, and utility crews are working to assess damage, restore services, and clear roadways while prioritizing public safety.

Multiple utility poles damaged

Officials say the storm caused significant damage to the city’s electrical system, including seven broken utility poles at multiple locations.

Forsyth Power crews have restored electricity to Monroe County Hospital, downtown Forsyth, Lee Street, and nearby areas.

City officials say additional assistance from the City of LaGrange is on the way to help speed up restoration efforts.

Power crews will continue working to restore electricity to the remaining affected areas.

Water and wastewater systems affected

The city’s water and wastewater treatment plants were also impacted by the storm-related power outage.

City officials say both wastewater plants are now back online. Crews are currently prioritizing power line repairs connected to the city’s water treatment plant.

The water department reports that all water tanks appear to be at safe levels, and reserve tanks are available if needed. Officials say no interruption to water service is expected.

Roads blocked by storm damage

Several roadways experienced significant storm damage.

City officials say Sharp Street, Highway 42 and Pecan Circle were among the hardest hit areas.

Sharp Street is currently impassable due to fallen trees.

Two tree crews, including one local team and an out-of-town crew, are working to clear debris across the city.

The Forsyth Police Department is directing traffic and rerouting vehicles where necessary.

Officials warn about downed power lines

City officials are urging residents to avoid downed power lines and assume all lines are energized and dangerous.

Anyone who sees downed power lines or other hazardous conditions is asked to report them to Forsyth City Hall at 478-994-5649.
