MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — Vineville Academy celebrated Black History Month Thursday, with performances inspired by African American entertainers and activist, such as Maya Angelou and Little Richard.

Assistant principal Timothy Deas says this event was to show representation of those who have paved the way and brought change to the black community.

“Just to bring attention to those that have made great accomplishments in Black history,” he said.

Southwest basketball coach Monquincio Hardnett spoke to the students about the importance of future decisions and goals.

“It’s the young people that’s what drives me,” he said. “That’s what I’m into right now with everything that’s going on in the community. Vineville is a big part of my son’s life, always has been, whether it’s good or bad, they’ve always supported him.”

He wants the students to understand that education is the foundation of a successful future.

“That’s where it’ll start with everything they do,” he said. “Also, the company they keep, that will shape their decisions as well, but here in Bibb County there is a problem with attendance, so that’s why I spoke on availability. Availability is going to be their best ability. If you want to go to the next level, you have to be present and be in the moment.”

Deas says he hopes days like this will help students realize their full potential.

“I hope that they can take away that they can be anything that they desire to be,” he said. “There are no caps, no ceilings; the sky is not the limit. They can go higher than the sky and be all they desire to be in life.”

Deas says the school will continue to celebrate Black history all year long.
